Robert Saunders is a historian of modern Britain at Queen Mary University of London. It is the wartime generation that took Britain into the European community in the first place. People like Edward Heath and Harold McMillan had served either in the first or Second World War. So one of the most powerful posters in 1975 simply read 40 million people died in two European wars. Better to lose a little national sovereignty than a son or a daughter, he says.
