The Pros and Cons of Archival Records

One of the biggest problems with using archives is that they tend to reflect particular biases. One of the strengths about the British archival record in particular is that the British do tend to collect almost everything and allow researchers to have access to them. I'm not a very big fan of old-school empirical empiricists' kinds of research, which says that if you don't use an archive, that's not, then, you know, you're not really doing history.
