The four % rule is just doing the inverse of that. So instead of saying, how much can i draw from this portfolio, it's more like, how much do i need? Times 25%. The main difference with pension income is that i gene not an increase with inflation. Even if day one your pension is satisfactory in terms of your earnings, eventually the cost of living will continue to increase throughout your retirement such that it will double or maybe come close to triple,. Yet your pension income remained pretty flat.
