The Janissaries were the only standing army in Europe for most of the next century. The Ottomans had developed a much more effective and multifaceted military force than any of the other polities in the region. What's essential to understand about all this is how different it made the Ottoman polities around them. Those might be split into multiple units at the death of their ruler, unlike the Ottoman practice of Unigeniture.
