The left wing of the castle used to be a workhouse during the 18 hundreds. Orphaned or homeless children would be forced into slave labor in return for poor food and a floor to sleep on. These children had no rights, no autonomy, and were routinely abused, beaten or just murdered. The cellar of our pub was where the children in the workhouse would sleep away from machinery. As the children grew, they became more of a financial burden for the owners of the workhouse,. so they would be taken into the room opposite the men's room and drowned in the well.
