It was an election year and the seat for Suffolk County executive was open. Spoda endorsed a candidate named Steve Boulone who ran essentially unchallenged. Weeks following his victory, he appointed James Burke as chief of police. With Burke and Spoda now occupying two of the most important positions in Suffolk County, their alliance was more powerful than ever.
