The New York City Lunatic Asylum

In 18 39, the new york city lunatic asylum opened on the northern end of blackwell's island. The penitentiary and the mental institution were soon joined by other facilities like the 18 forty eight almshouse for the elderly and the infirm. Next to that was the workhouse, which opened in 18 52. By the 18 seventies, over 30 thousand people were being sent to the workhouse each year. And then there were the hospitals, mostly for the poor. Naturally, people with means were oftentreat at home or away at rural institutions. Patients were even forced to wear the prisoners pin stripe uniforms.
