The Invention of a Big Other
According to Lacan, if you have a psychotic who walks through your door, it might just be the person who is not suffering a break. If you misdiagnose their clinical structure as neurosis and you start treating them as though they were a neurotic patient, you can actually trigger according to Lacan the psychotic break that allows their underlying clinical structure of psychosis to blow up. So there's a great deal of emphasis in clinical Lacanian work on getting your diagnostics right. There will be no breaks. You can take a break if you need one.
