Wellington and the British Army
Wellington was born into a Protestant aristocratic family, not senior nobility by any means. He borrows money from his brother and is very quickly able to buy his way up the ranks. Wellington didn't demonstrate much aptitude for much if we're being really brutally honest in the early stage of his career. His mother famously said that she despaired of her son Arthur,. but he does join the army. Eventually he spends time in France, ironically, learning at a military academy at Anjur - it's actually an academy for equitation. But then he gains a commission in the army... And as I say, buys his way up.
