The Innocence of the Japanese

The Catholic Church has a very, very long standing tradition of evaluating actions leading to and in the course of prosecuting war that date back as far as St. Augustine who actually uses pre-Christian thinkers like Cicero in developing the just war theory. And one of these principles is that noncombatants, innocent civilians, are not to be harmed or deliberately harmed. The idea was to so terrorize the Japanese that there was no question that you had to leave the battlefield.
