A Cold War Conversation With Rudolf Ivanovich Abel

Rudolf Abel was not the spies real name. The man we all know, including the Soviets and including the Russians as Rudolf Ivanovich Abel or Abel as the Russians pronounced it, was born in the United Kingdom in England on July 11th, 1903. He was registered at birth as William August Fisher. His father's name was Heinrich Fisher, and he was an ethnic German who had escaped Tsarism because he was a Leninist. So with a friend, he got out of Russia at the very, very beginning of the 20th century. It was the threat of exile that brought old man Fisher to the northeast of England.
