I think that's because it's hard to identify with protagonists whose bodies are completely bulky and obscured. So when I was young and really getting into zombie movies, the prepping stuff did not yet have the sort of like right wing militia, QAnon associations that it has now in 2023. For me, the zombie movie speaks to this suspicion I've always had, which is like, we're all just like one inch away from going completely feral.
