Learn React - Is That the Best Place to Start?
React started out with a different sort of underlying system than it is generally using now. If you go to reactjs.org and just go through their tutorials, you're going to learn the old things that isn't really used a whole lot anymore. So I recommend learning functional based components first. For your API reference though, that part isn't unfortunately quite as far along in the beta docs.
