Is Reductive Materialism a Special Case?

Science as we currently see it today is a special case. Works for some things, doesn't work for everything. Scientists are interested in anomalies because it tells us that there is something about our original idea that wasn't quite right. So now we still have the original core, but we have a more comprehensive understanding. Reductive materialism works really, really well. For lots of things, it doesn't explain everything.
