What's the Controversy in the Pilot Episode of Madman?

The show continued to basically live in that contradiction even to its bitter end. I think ultimately it's the thing that makes cops doctors and lawyers so prevalent in television. The first scene of madman is really interesting because it's Don sitting in a restaurant talking to the the black waiter, who's serving him drinks about whether he smokes lucky strikes or why he doesn't smoke lucky strikes  and all that. But you don't really get it until the very end of the pilot when you realize that you know you've seen him fucking around. Most people probably don't read that much into that scene but I mean that's what I saw the third or fourth time it happened.
