The Thermic Effect of Protein on Calories

Protein is the most powerful macnutriant in that regard. It's something like 20 or 25 % of the calories go away through this thermic effect. When it's been tested empirically, it actually doesn't seem to make that big of a difference. But when you're in free living conditions, higher protein generally does work better - even when calory matchd just because of its satiety effect.
