What Are These Mining Machines Doing?

Mining machines are like a rhoda tiller strapped to the front of a bull dozer. They can go along the sea floor and just scrape this swath of the surface sediments into their hoppers. The effluent doesn't just settle back down on to the sea floor, it's advected rapidly. It's essentially nuturally buoyant in the water, calm at whatever depth it's released.
