The Ideology of Putin
Putin has reached back to this ideology of what was called official nationalism, official nationality, that came from the 19th century. He's more interested in that than he is in the Soviet Union because he's not a communist. But the great Russian nationalism he's trying to rebuild is one that can't be confined to the Russian Federation. That requires certain historical things to be true, including that Ukraine is Russia.
