In 1960, 25% of US households were dual income. Today, it's about 60%. And yet, those families' incomes are up probably 20% or so since 1990. This is actual gain, and that's 20% more than inflation. People should know this intuitively. All you have to do is ask a previous generation to compare the way they lived at the same point in their lives with the way we live now.
