The Potency of Opium
Levi is convinced that Elma is dead because she was a troubled woman who might have been addicted to an opioid. Catherine was not an impropriety. Her questioning Levi too much when he appears to be in despair would have been improper for anyone let alone a woman, so I don't see her following up. She goes missing December 22, the 24th of December, two days later is when they find the muff in the well. Then a day or two after that, we have a man who's near the well who just notices a one horse sleigh track and a couple of shoe prints. And the body has not been discovered at this point.
