What Is a Truce?

There was no single truce between british and german troops on the western front. Instead, there were a series of discreet truces that happened at various points across the line. There were some truces in the french and belgian sectors, but these were much less common. For officers in charge of both sides, a truce might offer practical benefits beyond its sentimental value. It could be an opportunity to drain and sure up your own sodden trenches - or even bury the dead out in no man's land.
