The Cost of Living Crisis in the UK
22 million people will have to pay an extra £700 a year or thereabouts. The poorest customers, those with prepaid metres, will be hit the hardest. Chancellor Rishi Sunak has moved to cushion the blow by offering a one-off council tax rebate of £150 to around 80% of households in England. Oil producers BP and Shell have reported combined annual profits of more than £20 billion. Some politicians are calling for a windfall tax on the big energy firms.
