Lewis was reflecting the culture in which he was a part, especially at Oxford. He had just internalized all these various attitudes as we all do. Once you meet individuals that provide a counter example to what you have assimilated, you suddenly realize, oh, my goodness, my culture has given me an inaccurate sense of this group of people.
