The poem itself inscribed on different clay tablets across the Middle East lay buried for a staggering 18 centuries that's nearly 2000 years until it was rediscovered in the mid 19th century. Louise briefly talk us through what happened so the British historian and diplomat Austin Henry layard and the Assyrian archaeologist Hosmourne Rassam discovered the ancient palace of the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal at Nineveh. In 1872 he discovered a Babylonian flood story that had remarkable parallels to the biblical flood story from the book of Genesis.
