Exaggeration of the Blood Eagle
The so-called blood eagle execution reportedly involved cutting the ribs away from the spine. Modern depictions of this execution are often fantastically gruesome and macabre. In some versions, it's been claimed that the victim would still be alive when they were killed. The notion of the Vikings as bloodthirsty is almost certainly also exaggerated through the centuries.
