The Origins of Race
In Tanzania, the way of talking about people's origins or their belonging was incommensurable with the way we do it in the United States. I needed to experience that in order to be able to write about race when I came back home and went to graduate school because that was being in a place where I was surrounded by black people, but not black people. They were Wapansania or they were Waprika. That turned race into a historical phenomenon for me so that when I wrote about it later, I couldn't write about it the way the primordialists did.
