The Impact of Appeasement on British Retirement
Chamberlain was advised clearly and unambiguously that the Western democracies were not prepared for war. Could he have pushed back against this? Sure. But it didn't because it reaffirmed what he already thought was the right course of action in his search for peace. We also know today that the apogee of appeasement at Munich would delay the start of the war by only a year, but what if it had been five years? Ten years? How would that have changed things? It probably would have changed it a lot.
