Mumford and the Machine Age
Mumford says from the machine age comes the will to order which is in relation to a move from a society or a culture of quality to one of quantity. He's then asking well what was actually already in place to allow the machine age to take place? And this is clearly answered later on. But his point with that isActually well if you have this machine age he's saying that for machines in that practical sense to begin to divide, to begin to quantify and put into certain orders. In a very eric vogel in sense there has to be a cultural foundation for a social understanding of what that means.
