margin of error is a notation that started to be required in the research community about ten years ago. On line poles are not considered truly random samples and cannot be assigned a margin of error. Polling could be more reliable, but only if we believed that everybody who has a phone would be willing to take the call. There's lots of other advantages to on line polling these days in terms of speed and cost effectiveness or that sort of thing. We know that results from on line poles can be extraordinarily accurate.
