The Dome of a Cathedral

The cathedral was symbolized really as a ship bearing the people of god. So this is where all the people coming to the cathedral to worship will congregate. The transep, it means across or through, or over to the other side. And then there's the septum which can also mean a sort of enclosure - an enclosure with the transept off. above it there is a dome. Where does that come from? Ye, it dont simply goes back to the latin for the same sort of shape, if you like. Many a cathedral has a mighty tower. Why is a tower called a towen?
