How to Make Small Talk
Making small talk is not so much about what you say but it's actually about creating a space between you and the other person. This could be smiling this could be complimenting or just being open to someone - don't hit him with issues right away. And that's sort of how you do it that's a different thing but this should be the goals if the goal is not to have an interesting conversation but to have a moment where both feel safe.
