Stand for the Flag, Kneel for the Cross - It's a Serious Appeal to Certain Bible Texts
The demand to stand for the flag arose as an anti black response to these protests. It was tied in with Christianity to be a good Christian was also to support the nation unconditionally, which meant that to kneel for the flag was not only unpatriotic, it was unchristian. The slogan is virtually absent from majority black and social justice minded, Christian communities because they know this history. They remember where the slogan came from. And when leaders who share their Christian national sentiments are in office, they're convinced that only their leaders can be divinely appointed.
