In 1988, the World Health Organization made it their goal to eradicate polio from the Western Hemisphere by 1990. In 1991, that was when the last case of wild polio virus transmission was recorded in Peru. The WHO estimates that 16 million people have been saved from paralysis. But clearly there are still cases around.
