There was a sort of mania for americanism. And along with the enthusiasm for the war, there was a effort to clean out and eliminate foreign influences in tulsa. The city set up a general censor board, which was asked them with condemning and suppressing bad newspapers or articles that were considered unpatriotic or disloyal. Along with this, there also was an intense hostility to unions. Some of the organizers, radical anarchists, socialists involved in these unions were seen as foreign agents.
