Traction diverticulum is an area of intestinal metoplasia at the lower esophagus. It markedly increases your risk of developing esophageal cancer, and it's on the order of 30 to 60 times. If symptomatic for these patients, a VATS diverticulectomy in myotomy is typically the best course of treatment. You want to do four quadrant biopsies every one to two centimeters of involved segment.
