Hipparchus was a relative to the Pisistratus. His election may have been an attempt to give a position of authority in order to use his influence, on behalf of the Athenians with Hippious and through him with Persia. At the very least, his appointment would have been seen as opposition to the policy of open warfare against Persia. In 494 BC, Cleomani has received an oracle at Delphi, predicting that he would capture Argos. So he marched his army to the territory of Thyria on the eastern coast of the Peloponnese - between Laconia and Argos.
