The Risks of Using a Password Manager

Ralph writes, I keep credentials in a plain text file that's encrypted using secret by Peter Selinger. To use credentials, I copy and paste them from an X term to the web browser. I save a backup of the encrypted file in a cloud VM. Everything's running free BSD. How safe is this strategy? He says you're your own biggest risk with something like that. Depending on your threat model, that might be slightly better or slightly worse than a password managerLike Bait Morden and a couple others, which are basically doing the same thing but have automated a little bit of it.
