As Bhatia spent more time in the United States, she found herself playing translator between two cultures. When her mom came to visit from the Netherlands, where they went to pick up Bhatia's son from school one day. The school teacher greeted Bhatia’s mom effusively. And then when we drove back, she said to me, that was really fake, wasn't it? At that point, I didn't think it was fake. It's a different way of being in the world.
