Passage comes from the word Passage which is a verb and Passage means to walk but not only like you don't need to have a clear direction to Passage you can walk just for the sake of walking. And it came to be this way because of these battles over history between the Catalan bourgeoisieThese wealthy families who who decide to build their new family homes in this new part of town when it was being built. It all started around the time of the Ildiphon Cérdaz plan for the city. This is the guy who designed the ice champland the very famous grid system of Barcelona during the 1800s.
