In 1950 a Japanese survey estimated that a combined 368,259 people had survived the atomic blast 18 had survived both These survivors came to be known by the derogatory term of heba kusha meaning survivor or exposed one. They would live as pariahs in japanese society for the rest of their lives because many people erroneously believed radiation exposure and therefore radiation sickness could be contagious.
