Taiwan wasn't immediately made a province of the Republic. For the time being, they were ruled by a military government. Chanyi stuffed his administration with mainlanders and the closer to Chichiang Province they were, the better. Crime skyrocketed with the new police force staffed almost entirely by mainlanders. Many Taiwanese who did not collaborate with the Japanese got their homes and assets seized anyway.
