The Role of Eyes in Mortician Practices
In many cases, the deceased were propped up to appear lifelike and posed alongside siblings, parents and other family members. And in some extreme circumstances, eyes were painted on the photo after the fact to make the person appear awake and alive. Jess: It's interesting how our own societal mores change, you know, of en stigmas and stuff like that. Back then it was like, oh no, we got to keep these eyes open.
