The word ultramarine means beyond the sea. And so, because it's so precious and special and expensive and difficult to manufacture, who would be using it? Well, particularly in the Renaissance, it's not just about the artists, it's about the patron. The patrons would want the works of art that they were commissioning to contain ultramarine as it was so precious and rare and expensive and beautiful.
