Sarah Hart and her children lived in a small cottage on the outskirts of slough. John Tall was struggling himself, though you should feel much less sympathy for him. He had returned from the penal colony in Australia, a rich man. But England was entering an economic depression at the time. The trigger was that he wasn't giving Sarah Hart the money she needed to support her children.
