Long-distance relationships can be created by marriage partners going long distances. Fishers are mobile so they often have to move to other villages for half the year to fish and have access. These sorts of networks can create lots of connecting long-distance relationships trade is another one. People with more network ties outside of their village recover better from extreme rain events whether that's drought or flood.
