Education and the Local Economy
For most children in this period they're leaving school at 14 and any educational opportunities beyond the elementary school were extremely limited. Head teachers might deliberately cultivate links with local employers to prepare students for their working futures. There's also practical work as well so that's things like cookery and laundry for girls and it's woodwork and gardening for boys. Some of that is explicitly framed around employment so geometry there was a one school where geometry was taught unusually in the art curriculum of a boys school.
