The History of Written Promises in Mesopotamia
Mesopotamian case records show that the rules were setting out some general principles. They probably did in fact solidify certain important social principles, but I don't think we should think of them as being directly applied to judges today. Some ancient laws or rules like the 10 commandments are just straight commands. But a lot of the Mesopotamian ones actually specify consequences, don't they? Exactly. And also in the Old Testament.
