Introduction
Most catholics to day know about saint thomas's eucharistic devotion is not through the early biographies of his life, but through the hymns that he composed for the office of corpus christi. In 12 64, pope urban the fourth inaugurated the feast of corpus Christi for the universal church. O salutaris hostia and tantum ergo sacra mentum are the concluding stanzas of the hymms that he composed for lauds and vespers for the feast. It was his will that the institution of the most holy sacrament receive its own proper celebration.
