I think I was just portraying a sort of upper-class British doctor immediately marking his territory when this obviously Scottish guy with the thick accent comes. And Claude is flawed. He does have a serious alcohol problem. Is he a victim of his circumstances in geography like everybody else? I don't think so. It's hard for other people to identify unless they've walked the same path as you. People who have suffered deeply find commonality that might resist them with anybody else. There's another line later in the book on page 122 that really got to me. Secrecy lives in the same room as loneliness.
