Raphael Bear is a guardian columnist and the author of a new book Politics, A Survivor's Guide. The subtitle of the book is How to Stay Engaged Without Getting Enraged. Do we actually need the rage to get things done? Do we need a bit of grit in the oyster? Well, I definitely make the distinction in the book between anger, which is essential, and the kind of incapacitating rage that makes people want to throw up their hands and despair of politics. If it doesn't make you effective, drop it like a hot potato.
